Why Your AI Photos Look Fake (and How to Fix It)

You can usually feel it before you can explain it. A photo scrolls past and something is off, the face is a little too smooth, the light is a little too perfect, the whole thing looks rendered instead of taken. That instinct is real, and it's specific. People don't clock AI images by magic. They clock a short list of recurring tells, and once you know them, you can spot them in your own work and fix them.

1. Plastic, poreless skin (the number-one tell)

Most image models are trained on heavily retouched, beauty-filtered photos, so they default to smooth, poreless skin. The model averages out the pores, fine lines, and color variation that make real skin scatter light unevenly, and you're left with a flat, synthetic surface. Even people who can't articulate why will say a face "looks AI", this is almost always what they're reacting to.

Real skin has texture you can see at full zoom: pores across the nose and cheeks, faint redness, a few stray hairs, oil sheen in some spots and matte in others. AI skin is uniform.

The fix: prefer models and presets that keep skin texture instead of erasing it, and avoid stacking beauty filters on top of an already-smoothed render. If you're prompting, ask explicitly for visible skin texture, pores, and natural imperfections. A face that's slightly imperfect reads as a hundred times more real than one that's flawless.

2. "Too perfect" lighting and symmetry

What gives an AI image away in 2026 is rarely resolution, it's that the image is too good. Too clean, too evenly lit, too symmetrical, too composed. The averaging effect that produces smooth skin also produces hyper-balanced faces and lighting that no real room ever has.

Think about an actual phone selfie: the light comes from one window, so one side of the face is brighter; the framing is a little crooked; there's a touch of motion blur. AI defaults to a studio-balanced ideal that never happens by accident.

The fix: introduce ordinary imperfection. Off-center framing, light coming clearly from one direction, a casual angle instead of a dead-on portrait. The classic ones. Hands still come out with too many or too few fingers, fingers that merge, thumbs on the wrong side, or knuckles bending in directions knuckles don't go. Teeth can be too many, too even, shrunken, or stretched. Ears warp, and earrings sometimes float or duplicate.

These areas are high-variation and high-detail, so models average them into trouble more often than the central face. The newer models are markedly better, but "better" is not "solved."

The fix: zoom in before you post. Hands, the gum line, ear shape, and any jewelry are where artifacts hide. If a hand is borderline, crop it out or regenerate. Don't ship a photo because the face is great if the hand has six fingers, that one detail undoes the whole image.

4. Garbled background text

Any text in an AI image is almost always garbled, partially readable, or arranged in nonsensical ways, street signs, storefronts, book spines, logos, labels on a coffee cup. The brain reads real words instantly, so fake ones jump out.

The fix: keep text out of frame, or prompt for "no text or signage." If you need a setting that normally has text, a café, a gym, a city street, favor angles and depth of field that blur the signage rather than render it sharp and wrong. A legible-text model helps, but the safest move is simply not to bet the photo on a sign.

5. The "AI stare"

The averaging that flattens skin also flattens expression. You get a plastic, vaguely-familiar, hyper-symmetrical face with eyes that look at you but not quite present, the so-called AI stare. Pupils can be subtly mismatched in size or shape, catchlights can be missing or duplicated, and the gaze has a glassy, posed quality.

The fix: check the eyes at full zoom for matching pupils and natural catchlights. Favor candid expressions, mid-laugh, looking off-camera, caught between moments, over the straight-to-lens hero shot. Movement and imperfection in the face break the stare.

6. Warped backgrounds and broken physics

The main subject can be convincing while the background quietly falls apart: furniture melting into walls, buildings bending, a duplicated person in a crowd, a railing that passes through an arm, a shadow falling the wrong way. AI clones and smears elements it doesn't fully model, and the edges are where it shows.

The fix: scan the whole frame, not just the face. Check reflections in glasses, mirrors, and water, these are notorious for not matching the scene. Check that shadows agree on where the light is. If the background is busy, simpler is safer.

7. Identity drift across a set (the one that actually matters)

Here's the tell most "spot the AI" lists miss, because it only appears when you see more than one image. A single good photo can pass. A set gets caught, because the face subtly changes from shot to shot, slightly different nose, jaw, eye spacing, or age, and the lighting is suspiciously identical across all of them. Humans are excellent at noticing when "the same person" isn't quite the same person.

For a one-off image this doesn't matter. For a dating profile, an Instagram feed, or an AI persona that posts regularly, it's the whole ballgame. Inconsistent identity is the difference between "nice photo" and "this account is fake."

  2. Light and framing, does it look like one window and a casual angle, or a flawless studio?
  3. Hands, teeth, ears, correct count, natural shapes, no merges or floats?
  4. Text, any signage in frame actually legible, or garbled? (If garbled, crop or blur it.)
  5. Eyes, matching pupils, real catchlights, present expression, not the stare?
  6. Background and reflections, nothing melting, duplicating, or disagreeing about the light source?
  7. The set, if it's part of a profile or feed, does the face match the others exactly?

Ten seconds an item, and you catch the overwhelming majority of tells before anyone else does.
