A single AI photo can fool almost anyone now. A feed of them usually can't. The difference isn't the model you used, it's whether you know the specific tells that make AI images read as fake, and whether you fixed them.

Here's the field guide: the four tells that scream "AI," why each happens, and exactly what to do about it.

Tell #1: Plastic skin

This is the big one. Open most AI portraits and the skin looks like it's been through three rounds of beauty retouching before the shutter even clicked. No pores, no fine lines, no uneven tone. Just a smooth, matte, slightly waxy surface.

It's a training-data problem, not a you problem. Image models learn from editorial and stock photography that was already heavily retouched before publication, so the model internalizes that "good skin" equals "poreless skin." Real skin does the opposite of poreless: it has texture that scatters light unevenly, which is exactly what your brain uses to read a face as human.

The fix: push for texture explicitly and ban the words that cause smoothing.

  • Ask for "natural skin texture, visible pores, fine lines, slight asymmetry, matte skin."
  • Avoid "flawless," "perfect skin," "porcelain," "airbrushed", these prompt the plastic look.
  • If you post-process, keep any smoothing at roughly 30–40% strength so texture survives, and heal blemishes individually rather than blanket-blurring the whole face.

The goal isn't to make skin worse. It's to make it real, and real skin has visible structure up close.

Tell #2: Dead eyes and perfect symmetry

You've felt this even when you couldn't name it: the features are flawless but the face feels hollow. Two culprits.

First, the eyes. Real eyes carry tiny catchlights, reflections of the actual light source, and those reflections are asymmetric and context-specific. AI eyes often miss them, or put identical reflections in both eyes, or render glassy irises with no depth. University at Buffalo researchers specifically flagged eye reflections (and the reflections on any glasses) as a prime check, because the lighting on them frequently doesn't match the scene.

Second, symmetry. AI loves balance. Human faces hate it. Every real face is subtly lopsided, one eyebrow higher, a slightly crooked smile, uneven ears. When AI delivers a perfectly mirrored face, the brain files it under "not quite human."

The fix: prompt for "candid expression, natural asymmetry, genuine catchlights in the eyes," and favor mid-action or slightly imperfect expressions over a posed, dead-center stare. A half-smile caught off-guard reads more real than a symmetrical grin.

Tell #3: Ring-light glow (lighting that's too good)

The most common lighting tell has a name: ring-light face. It's even, warm, shadowless frontal illumination that flatters everything and reveals nothing. AI defaults to it because it's all over the training data and it's safe. The problem is depth, real light has a direction, and direction creates shadow, and shadow is what makes a face look three-dimensional.

Two failure modes here:

  1. Too perfect: flat, diffused, no real shadows. Looks like a studio that doesn't exist.
  2. Physically impossible: the face is lit from the left but the shadow falls left too, or highlights on different objects contradict each other. Real scenes have one or two identifiable light sources and the shadows agree with them.

The fix: specify the light. "Window light from the left, soft directional shadows," or "overcast daylight," or "warm indoor lamp, single source." Lead with the physical constraint before the aesthetic one. You want lighting that could happen in a real room, not lighting that's merely flattering.
